people helping with furniture relocation on moving day

Moving to a new place can be stressful. Whether you’re moving within your own city or moving to a completely different city or even moving abroad, the emotional and physical toll of packing up your belongings is often difficult. Our 5 hacks include planning, enlisting help, making an inventory, labelling everything, and being patient, so you can get organized and make moving day easier.

How to Make Moving Easier

From house-hunting, signing the lease on a new place, packing up your furniture and all the other things you need to do to prepare for your move to the actual moving day and settling into a new place, relocation is a long affair. But wait! Don’t panic. If you’re planning to move to a new place soon, we’ve got five cool hacks to help make moving a breeze.

Plan, Plan, Plan

This tip might seem obvious but it’s amazing how easy it is to forget the little things when we’re looking at the bigger picture. Start planning at least a month in advance to move to your new place. Break your tasks into smaller goals and set a date against each goal to help you stay on track (for example: you want your garage packed three weeks prior to d-day). Crossing off items on a to-do list will give you a sense of achievement and prevent last-minute panic. Not just that, you’ll be certain not to miss anything out and will have a more efficient moving experience.

Enlist Help

We know relocation expenses can take a toll on your bank account but if you can afford it, try to hire a relocation service. There are plenty of affordable relocation companies and with a little bit of research, you’ll be able to find relocation assistance within your budget. Having someone else take care of your packing and moving will save you a lot of time and stress. If a moving service does not fall within your budget, it might be a good idea to ask friends or even college students (for a small fee) if they would be willing to help you with some of the larger tasks. After all, the more help you have, the faster (and easier) the work will be.

Make An Inventory

Before you move to your new home, take a day to visit your new place so you have a chance to make note of everything you’ll need in your new home. This could be small items such as extension cords, lightbulbs, cleaning items, etc. or larger items such as curtains, cushions, toilet paper...etc. To cut back on the number of boxes and bags you carry, it might be a good idea to leave behind items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, conditioners and other toiletries. These will easily be available in most places you move to.

Making a list and keeping track of what you’re packing and leaving behind will also help you determine if any of your belongings get lost or misplaced during the moving process.

Label Everything

Just like an inventory, labeling your boxes will cut a lot of time off your moving process. It will also help you keep track of your belongings and pack and unpack in an organized manner. You can label your boxes by using a marker to write the items on the box or use a label maker to create labels for your boxes. If you want to use art as an outlet for moving stress, you could even create fancy labels to stick on your boxes. This will help you know which boxes you’d like to unpack first, know which room to leave a specific box in and also help you (or your moving service) handle boxes with fragile items in them with extra care.

Be Patient

Moving is not an easy or quick process. While it may be tempting to want to be unpacked and settled in your new home as soon as possible, be gentle with your expectations. Pack, unpack and arrange your new home with patience. After all, you’re going to be spending a lot of time there and it’s important to make sure it’s as comfortable as possible. Unpack the rooms, like the bedroom and kitchen, which you know you’ll need to use immediately and save the larger rooms for later. If you don’t have furniture, consider renting read-to-move furniture packages from CasaOne. There are several furniture rental packages with bedroom packages, living room packages, dining room packages and more to help you make moving and setting up a breeze.
